Tired of dating apps: what women in their 30s are doing instead

App download data from Sensor Tower shows that dating app downloads among women aged 28 to 40 have declined every year since 2022. The decline is not explained by women finding partners — marriage rates in this demographic have remained flat. It is explained by women leaving the apps without a replacement destination.

Why the 30s specifically

By 30, most women have been on dating apps for the better part of a decade. The accumulated experience is not neutral. It includes a body of evidence about what these interactions tend to produce: initial contact, brief exchange, gradual ghosting, or a handful of dates that go nowhere. The sample size is large enough, by the thirties, that the pattern is visible.

The decade also raises the stakes in ways that make the low signal-to-noise ratio of apps more costly. Women in their thirties are clearer about what they want, less willing to invest time in situations that are obviously wrong, and more aware of what disappointment feels like after an evening they can't get back.

What women are actually doing instead

A significant proportion stop actively looking and redirect their time and attention toward other parts of their lives. This is sometimes described as "giving up" but more accurately reflects a recalibration of where to put limited energy. The women who describe this don't feel defeated. They describe relief.

A growing number describe finding what they were actually looking for — not a relationship necessarily, but the specific experiences the apps were supposed to deliver: genuine connection, interesting exchange, someone who seems actually curious about them — in places they didn't expect.

What they were looking for that the apps weren't providing

The research is clear that the most important variable in relationship satisfaction is not compatibility on stated preferences but what psychologists call "felt understanding" — the subjective experience of being known by another person. Dating apps optimise for stated compatibility. They have no mechanism for producing felt understanding.
